English language is spoken in touristic places of Tibet.

HISTORY

For centuries, many countries tried to invade and control Tibet such as Mongolia, China, Great Britain and Nepal. In 1911, the Chinese Revolution overtuned the Qing Manchu dynasty who was ruling over Tibet. From 1911 to the invasion of Chinese troops in 1949, Tibet was a country totally independent and able to stay apart from the foreign interference on its territory.

In 1949, Chinese government sent the Popular Army to Tibet to redefine the borders with the Popular Republic of China. The small Tibetan army was quickly defeated and 40 000 Chinese soldiers settled down on the Tibetan territory whose mission is to “release the Tibetan people from their old beliefs and traditions”. A civil resistance emerged and to fight against it the Chinese army organized a repression more and more violent destroying religious buildings, arresting and torturing monks and community leaders. In 1959, the Tibetan popular movement is huge and fiercely suppressed by the Chinese army who invaded Lhasa forcing the 14th Dalai Lama to leave the country along with 80 000 Tibetans. In 1960, the Dalai Lama has formed the Tibetan government in exile at Dharamsala. From 1950 to 1976, the Tibetan genocide is estimated to 1,2 million dead people.

Since 1959, the Chinese government keeps on ruling over the Autonomous Region of Tibet and slowly eradicates the Tibetan culture by destroying religious buildings, Tibetan books and masterpieces… Some Tibetan riots have since occurred to defend and protect the Tibetan and Buddhist values and culture, always suppressed with big violence from the Popular Army of China.

The Tibetan exile is unfortunately still underway today.

GEOGRAPHY

Tibet is a huge plateau located et an elevation of 4000 meters elevation, in the south-west of China, on the north side of Himalayas. It shares borders with China, India, Nepal (and Everest), Bhutan and Myanmar. Its capital city is Lhasa, at 3650m.

The biggest rivers from Asia take their spring from there, such as Brahmaputra, Indus or Mekong.

CLIMATE

Due to its average elevation, climate in Tibet is dry and cold. Winds are very strong because of the plateau geography.

Temperatures ranges from -10/-5°C to 7/12°C during winter months (November to March) and from 12/15°C to 20/23°C during summer months (April to October). The monsoon hits Tibet from mid-June to mid-September but because of the natural barrier formed by Himalayan Range, rainfalls are not as important as the south side of Himalayas.

FAUNA & FLORA

Many animals live on the Tibetan plateau such as the yak, the kiang (wild donkey), the Tibetan antelope, the snow leopard, the Tibetan sand fox or the marmot. Some local dogs carry well their names: the Tibetan mastiff, the Tibetan terrier or the Tibetan spaniel. We can also find the black-necked crane, one of the only birds capable of living at 5000 meters altitude, and vultures as well as other species of predatory birds.

Regarding flora, Tibet is a plateau quite dry with low-growing vegetation and many meadows. Some pine forests can be found in places with milder climate but the deforestation is massive. Tibet is also famous for its medical plants.
RELIGION

The most popular religion in Tibet is Tibetan Buddhism. There are also Böns, which is the ancestral religion from which the Buddhism comes from. Religious minorities also exist such as Muslims and Christians across the Autonomous Region of Tibet.
GASTRONOMY

Tsampa is the staple diet in Tibet, it is made from roasted barley flour. It can be mixed with hot water or tea to prepare a thick and nourishing dough. Tibetan are also meat consumers, especially yak and mutton smoked or in sausages. They also eat noodles (thentuk or thukpa) and momos (dumplings).

You can taste Tibetan tea as well, made from tea, rancid yak butter and salt or chang, the Tibetan wine made from barley.
CURRENCY

The yuan, also called renmibi. 1,00€ = 7,5¥ / 1,00US$ = 6,8¥ / 1,00£ = 8,8¥
LOCAL TIME

Lhasa time is set at GMT+8:00

[/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=”Travel to Tibet”]

ADMINISTRATIVE FORMALITIES

A passport valid until six months after the returning date is compulsory.

To travel to Tibet, you have to get visa before your stay in the country.
